Can anyone explain the process to get ITIN?
Munish - I visited to Express Services LLC, 4634 South 3rd Street, Louisville, KY 40214. (502-368-52100) which is only 10 mile drive from my home. This guy charged me $155 for both ITIN preparation and tax return filing. I needed to visit his office with my wife. He verified all documents and certified on copied version and returned me back all original along with passport. Then he sent the certified copies to IRS office for processing. So far its a cool process. I also checked in IRS website to find the status of my federal refund and its approved and yet to mail to my address.
Hi M G, Can you tell me which acceptance agent and what were the charges? And did you give them original passport
There is another process defined in IRS website @ http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Acceptance-Agents---Kentucky where ITIN can be processed via IRS acceptance agent. You don't need to visit any IRS office. The local acceptance agent will verify and certify all required documents and send to IRS for process. I followed the same process and received ITIN last week within three weeks.
Thanks Anand. How much time did it take? and how many people were there? I think Louisville will start verifying only after 3/31 as per below link: http://www.irs.gov/uac/TAC-Locations-Where-In-Person-Document-Verification-is-Provided so in case we cant go to Indianapolis we can apply for ITIN here only after 3/31.
Below is a earlier post on this forum. I used this as a guide and applied for my wife's ITIN on Jan/14/2014. It was pretty easy and straight forward.
The lady at IRS office mentioned that they were planning to authorize the Louisville IRS office to verify the documents for the ITIN number. You might want to check on that before driving to Indy.
This is the previous post that I mentioned earlier :
Documents required:
A) Original passport for husband and wife
B) Copy of Federal returns filing
C) W-7 form
The nearest office that does in-person verification is in Indianapolis. It opens at 8:30 am. Try and make it as early as possible. We were there at 8:30 sharp yet there were 15 people ahead in the line. They will give u a token number. Once they call out, submit all documents. The entire procedure takes about 15-20 mins ( excluding waiting time). I got my passport immediately after verification. She informed that I will get my ITIN in 10 weeks and the refund 2 weeks thereafter.
We filed our federal returns on turbotax. When an error occurs askn for SSN for dependent, go ahead and print without it.
PS: Roadside parking options are available on Pennsylvania ave itself. Cash/credit card. Or there is also a garage within 0.5 miles.
Check below link for address and office hrs.
Good luck!

The office we went to did the verification process. I will post the address below to avoid confusion.
Indianapolis 575 N. Pennsylvania St.
Indianapolis, IN 46204

The process sounds simple but we dont have IRS Tax assistance center where we can get our documents verified. We have to go to indianapolis to do so or else send passport with tax return to texas address or last option is to get the passport copy signed by Indian embassy in NY. Did anyone sent passport?
Just go to any Tax filling agent, he will take care of all the form and filling, but only thing is to take all those documents and visit nearest IRS office with family to file your tax and to get ITIN number.
Do we also need to send original passport along with the form.
Go through this form, you should get most of your reply. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw7.pdf I did more than 10 yrs ago but somewhat what i remember, I can say.Basically fill this form and mail tax return with this document.
