Obtaining ITIN to file tax returns Louisville, KY Desi Indian

Hello everyone..

Can somebody help me with the procedures of obtaining ITIN? 

It seems the rules have changed this year and we have to send the original passport to IRS to obtain ITIN for myself. The louisville federal office at downtown takes only 8 appointments a day I heard and hence we gotta be there as early as 6am to fix the appointment they say. 

To get back our passport the same day, we have to go to Indianapolis. Can somebody clarify a bit more on how to file ITIN? This is the first time we are filing for ITIN and I'm in US since 6-7 months. It would be really helpful if somebody can guide.

I applied for ITIN recently and got it. 

I have attached 
1.form 1040-federal tax (if you don't know how to fill it consult one of the tax consultant)
2.W7 (You can fill on its own)
3.Certified kid's passport copy (I got it certified from Inidan Embassy Chicago. You need to show original passport for certifying)
4.Copy of W2 form

Send above documents to IRS office ,Austin.

Thank u Manish and A.Agarwal for the replies. Did any of u manage to get it done? We have decided to go to Indianapolis as well but getting delayed due to various reasons. If any of u have managed to get it done, could you guys share your experience? It would be helpful.

even I spoke to IRS after hanging on phone over 30 minutes about this. yes we need to send original passport ( if sent alone then it will suffice) or any other document but it should prove your Identity( india drivers license, voter id) AND your visa status. alone identity will not do. so we have only 2 options 
1. send the tax return with W-7 filled and passport(alone passport will suffice both) or go to indiana to get the passport back same day. if you send mail to Austin it takes 6-8 weeks to passport to come back.
I have decided to go to indianapolis and get it done. and one more thing.. all the applicants ( including children) should be physically present in the office while this verification process.

yes, Process for ITIN has changed from July 2011. Earlier IRS used to accept Notorized copy of passport for ITIN application. Now no motorized copy has been accepted. As per new process you need to do either of these
1) Either send original passport in mail along with ITIN application to Austin, TX office
2) Get Certified copy of passport from Indian passport office or Indian embassy in Washington D.C
3) Need to visit Tax centers where certification is done and passport is handover on the spot

No other option then these. As you said Louisville downtown office does not give good no. appointment in a day then search out other nearest possible center.

Are you doing ITIN application with 1040 return of ur spouse? if you are not doing 1040 return as Married filing jointly where ur spouse is Resident alien for 2012 (i.e. in US for more then 182 days in 2012) then you will not get ITIN application. IRS office will reject upfront.
